Fashionista Friday: All That Glitters

Check out my latest CollegeFashionista post and see how you can incorporate a little bit of glitter into your life! It was the very last thing I noticed about Gabriel's outfit (which, by the way, is completely on point) and I immediately went home and painted my own nails all glittery.

So All About That: Closet+

The first time I ever watched Clueless I almost died when I saw Cher's virtual closet. I thought it was something that existed (this movie was made in the 90's, after all!) but that I just hadn't heard about. Having the ability to create outfits without having to try them on is a long-lived dream of mine. I cannot tell you how sad I was to learn that this technology has not yet been invented. While we wait for this fashion revolution to develop, I've found a pretty awesome substitute: Closet+.

This app so satisfies my need to have everything in life properly organized. I love having another method of easy-to-use organization in my life.

Adventures in Short Hair: Flat Iron Curls

I've never really been good with hair. The extent of my hair styling abilities is being able to french braid. However, I've recently discovered that day-after hair with short hair doesn't look as good as it did when I had long hair. So, I've been forced to experiment with crazy things like straightening and curling my hair. This is the first of probably many updates about my adventures with short hair.

I've tried curling my hair on more than one occasion to no success. Somehow I always burn my fingers on a curling iron, so the only heated hair product I own is a straightener (the plastic edges ensure less fingers being burnt). I'd heard you can curl your hair with a hair straightener but I'd never seen it done until I came across this post on Pinterest. It was super helpful and I followed the tutorial provided in this attempt to curl my hair.

Here's a quick peek at my attempt:

It only took me 27 minutes but I managed to get the results I'd wanted! It didn't last very long– the curls completely flattened when I went to sleep– but it was definitely worth it for the day. I wouldn't be able to maintain this every day but it's nice to have it as an option for special occasions.

My Favorite Things 10/26

When I was going through really rough times in high school, I would do this thing where I would write down things I liked at the end of every day. It was similar to Oprah's Favorite Things, only intended for my eyes only instead of the masses of people who follow Oprah. As we wane into winter, I'm trying to find light everywhere I can. I'm hoping that, by making a list of things I have enjoyed this week, I'll find it easier to look forward to another week of being able to enjoy other things.

My first Favorite Things list accompanies this Instagram post. I can already tell it's going to be a long week– I have 2 midterms and a flight on Friday an hour after my final class of the day gets out.

  1.  Liquid highlighters: As I mentioned, I have 2 midterms this week, so I've been doing quite a bit of studying. I like liquid highlighters as opposed to ink highlighters because they have a crisper and cleaner color.
  2. Elastic headband: I'm so all about leopard print right now, but it's hard putting together an outfit that will still be comfortable after I've spent a couple hours in the same seat in the library. This headband adds a touch of cute while serving a critical function of keeping my hair out of my eyes while I'm hunched over a textbook.
  3. Marc Jacobs sunglasses: Again with the leopard print! It's been raining off-and-on this last week, but it's always miserable being caught in a moment of sun without sunglasses. These have a nice yellow tint that make them easy to wear in both the rain and the sun.
  4. Mini ear cuff: Another way to add some style to an otherwise lazy and uninspired outfit.
  5. Mint Runa: I have an 8 am class twice a week, and getting out of bed is hard on those days. I like Runa because it's delicious and energizing but doesn't feel as heavy as coffee does.
  6. Maya Moon leather lanyard: I recently figured out how to clip my keys to Luxe's leash with this lanyard. It's cute and functional– a must right now.
  7. Clinique lipliner: I'm on a life quest to make my lips look as amazing as Kylie Jenner's, and lip liner is a pretty essential tool in this journey.
  8. Sewing scissors: After the Project Runway season 13 finale last Thursday, I've suddenly been inspired to start sewing again. It's a great creative outlet without being too physically or emotionally taxing.

If you want to go a little punk rock but are having a hard time figuring out how, check out my latest CollegeFashionista post.

What to Wear This Halloween

I've had my Halloween costume(s) picked out for weeks–though I won't be posting about it until after Halloween. However, I will also be in the airport flying down to Arizona for a cousin's wedding for Halloweekend so I won't be able to take full advantage of dressing up. I've thought long and hard about the perfect costumes for Halloween this year and, as I won't be using them myself, I figured I'd let you in on the secret!

This video may have come out in 2011, but it's so timeless and classic that it's still a relevant pop-culture costume for this year. After all, this is what really brought Lana Del Rey to the scene.

Flower crown
Red lipstick
Liquid eyeliner
Red stiletto nails

Okay, so Midas only ever had a daughter in the Nathaniel Hawthorne version of the myth... But who doesn't love an excuse to dress in all gold? Even if people don't know what you are, there'll be no doubt that you dressed up.
Get this look:
Gold lip temporary tattoo
Gold foil
Gold body makeup
Gold dress

Wear the extravagantly detailed uniform of a bullfighter without fighting any bulls– everyone wins! You don't need to support bullfighting to support the awesome style that's come from this ancient practice.
Get this look:
Black leggings
Black hat
Embroidered jacket

The colors and texture of this painting are so magnificent and easily recognizable. As it's one of the most famous paintings of all-time, they make clothing with fabric that looks like the piece of art. If you're feeling more creative/have the time, you can even paint Starry Night onto a white dress like Julia Reidhead.

My Space

Those of you who saw my Instagram post this morning know what's coming: a room tour post! Living in campus living means everything is pretty compact and often disorganized, so it's taken me a while to get my room to a level of cleanliness acceptable to take pictures of. My roommate put up these awesome lights this weekend which really makes the whole place feel a lot homier.

I love the idea of decorating my room, but I never quite get around to doing it because I'm worried it's not going to turn out exactly the way I want it to. Here's what I've done so far, though!
