Do Denim

In the past, I haven't exactly appreciated denim. Recently, though, I discovered just how important denim is in a wardrobe. I'm currently adding some denim staples to my closet, and here's what I think the most important denim pieces to own are.

I'm an admittedly proud supporter of the Canadian tuxedo. The trick is either completely matching washes or making sure they're completely different, like this polka dot Canadian tuxedo.

I love overalls! They come in so many different variations, like these dark wash overalls. You can also style them similarly to how you would style regular jeans, like this black blazer look that would work perfectly well with pants. The overalls only add an awesome aspect to the outfit.

A casual shirt-style dress is perfect for warm spring days. Warmer days call for a short sleeved denim dress, while a light-wash chambray dress is perfect for cool summer evenings.

An easy way to do denim is by simply rolling it up: jeans and shirts alike.

Rock an oversized jacket the intended way or by simply throwing it over your shoulders.

OOTD: Sister Sister

Shoes: Dr. Marten's
Socks: Sock Dreams
Skirt: Similar from Mod Cloth
Flannel: Similar from Nectar
Vest: Similar from Mango
Necklace: Similar from Free People
Hat: Similar from American Eagle

A couple weeks ago, my family came to visit, and my sister got to stay with me in my room. Obviously that meant we dressed each other up and took OOTD pictures with the city as our backdrop. My sister and I have completely opposite senses of style, but she still managed to find a couple things in my closet she wanted to borrow for the day. It was also a complete honor to get to photograph the photographer for once!

DIY Review: Get Rid of Blackheads

When I'm not blogging, doing homework, hanging out with my dog, or sleeping, I'm loitering on Pinterest looking for some awesome DIYs to try. Sometimes they work, but sometimes they don't. To contribute to the already expansive collection of tutorials on the internet, I've decided to start documenting my trials of certain DIYs. Sometimes the person who does DIYs on a regular basis is able to DIY something much too difficult for us common folk to accomplish.

This first DIY is from Drop Dead Gorgeous Daily. It's a trick to get easily get rid of blackheads. As a human being with pores in her skin, I happen to have quite a few blackheads. After trying quite a few different methods, I decided to try this out.

The first step was to apply Vaseline to the area that had blackheads: in my case, my nose. I decided to gunk on as much as possible... Just in case.

Then I applied the saran wrap to keep the heat concentrated within that area. I'm assuming this helped catalyze the process of the Vaseline sinking into the pores infected with blackheads, but I'm no science major.

I was meant to hold a hot washcloth to my nose to further heat the area for 5 minutes, but I had a hard time keeping the washcloth hot. So, I held a damp and mostly lukewarm washcloth to my nose.

Remove the saran wrap...

And apply pressure to the area to push the now enlarged (and easier to remove) blackheads out!

Voila! Well, kind of. I didn't actually notice any significant decrease in blackheads on my nose, though I will admit the area was much smoother for several days following this DIY. I had decent results, but nothing I would call home about. To be honest, though, I didn't follow the instructions as well as I could have (specifically with the hot washcloth...), so it might be worth a try again in the future.
Check out some of my favorite DIYs on my Pinterest and try this one out for yourself!

Fashionista Friday: Lace on Lace

My post for CollegeFashionista this week focuses on making a classic spring texture, lace, wearable for this part of the year between winter and spring. Layering lace makes your look fun but still complex enough to wear in February. Read my post to learn more, and check out some of my favorite lacy pieces below.

Galentine's Weekend Getaway

This year, President's Day fell on a very convenient weekend. With Galentine's Day that Friday and Valentine's Day that Saturday, it was really the perfect three-day weekend for a little trip to Vancouver, BC with my dear friend Maddie. We got to spend Galentine's Weekend sipping mimosas (100% legally, may I add), exploring a new city, and sleeping in beds bigger than our twin sized dorm beds. Looking forward to our getaway got me through a very rough week (the reason I only posted once last week) and spending the weekend away left me energized and ready to take on the rest of the quarter. I have a strange affinity for taking excessive cityscape photos when I'm in a new place (or even in a new part of Seattle), so that's the majority of what I have to show from the weekend. In all fairness, Vancouver is really beautiful, so I don't feel that bad about it.

I'm sorry, but look how cute Maddie is! She was the perfect partner in legal activity and the perfect travel companion.

Don't worry: we found a used bookstore to peruse.

If you can't tell, it was quite a bit less sunny on one of the days.

"Love me when I least deserve it because that is when I most need it!" – a cute Valentine's Day quote.

We spent the whole weekend treating ourselves to lots of sleep and amazing food.

Seriously... amazing food.

Galentine's Day Gift Guide

Ever since one of the best shows of all time, Parks and Recreation, introduced Galentine's Day in 2009, it's been one of the best holidays of the year every year. I personally have celebrated Galentine's Day with great enthusiasm in the last 6 years. This year, CollegeFashionista has compiled a list of the best ways to celebrate Galentine's Day, and is hosting a $500 giveaway for the winner to celebrate Galentine's Day in the best way they can. Read the post and enter the giveaway to have the best Galentine's Day ever!

To contribute to this awesome Galentine's Day excitement, I've come up with a list of some great Parks and Recreation inspired gifts to give your Galentine(s) this weekend. Check them out below!

1. A hand-stitched Leslie Knope quote? Totally something Leslie herself would gift.
2. Sugar is a Leslie Knope classic favorite, and these heart-shaped tea sugars are perfect for your sweetest friend.
3. Hand-stitched pillows were a Leslie gift at the first Galentine's Day, so this "I love you" pillow is perfect for your Galentine.
4. Duh, Amy Poehler's book is a perfect Galentine's Day gift. Filled with girl power and Parks and Recreation behind-the-scenes stories, it's really a must-read for anyone who can, like, read.
5. Treat yo' friends to a "treat yo' self" mug. Sure, it's really more of a Donna than a Leslie thing, but everyone needs to know they deserve to treat themselves.
6. Lil Sebastian may no longer be with us, but this stuffed animal miniature horse is a great gift.
7. Can't you just see Leslie with this enthusiastic notebook?
