What to Wear for Halloween: 2016

If there's one thing I love, it's dressing up. I was a dancer when I was younger, and practically grew up in costumes. Halloween, then, is one of my favorite holidays because it's the only excuse I have as an adult to dress up. I spend the entire year thinking about what I'm going to be for Halloween. Below are some of the best ideas I've had this year.

I think the way humans conceptualize outer space is so beautiful. I would love to be an embodiment of that beauty, even if just for the night. They say we're all made out of atoms that, at one point, used to be part of stars and planets and comets. Bring out that part of you with a lot of glitter, some delicately embroidered fabric, and an easy DIY star crown.

I grew up reading novelized versions of Greek myths (isn't that typical of all children?). One of my favorite mythical characters is Medusa, a Gorgon with snakes for hair and whose look turned men to stone. Apart from these totally badass characteristics, she also has a completely enviable aesthetic. Get her look (without turning to stone) with a white maxi dress, a DIY snake headpiece, and lots of gold accessories.

This costume is near and dear to my heart: this was my Halloween costume my senior year of high school. As a former ballerina, this was a super easy costume to throw together. All you need is some black ballet flats (with some ribbon safety pinned in), a black tutu, a black bodysuit, black eyeliner, and a tiara.

The full title of this costume is, "Successful lawyer who murders her boss for refusing to pay her equal pay for the same job," but that was too long to put on the graphic. Put on your most revealing black dress, some black stilettos, a crisp maroon lip, and dip your hands in a little bit of fake blood to achieve the look.

What to Wear: to the Airport

Of all the occasions I dress for, dressing to travel is one of the most difficult. Balancing style with comfort and practicality is a hard line to walk. Luckily, I've been flying since I was 13 days old, and have picked up a couple of tricks to doing so in the appropriate clothing.

Whoever said leggings can't be pants just didn't want you to be comfortable. Leggings are ideal to wear when traveling because they're the perfect layering item and are simply comfortable enough to spend an otherwise uncomfortable day in.

If you're traveling somewhere a little chillier, a scarf is a must-pack. Save room in your suitcase and give yourself a built-in pillow by wearing a scarf on the plane.

No one likes airport security. Make the process a little easier on yourself by wearing shoes that are easy to slip on and off. Just don't forget to pair them with socks: you definitely don't want to walk barefoot through the metal detector!

Layering is essential when traveling for two reasons. First of all, wearing as much as possible leaves that much more room in your suitcase. Second of all, layering will help you adjust to the temperature changes from one place to the next; especially if you're traveling somewhere cold or if you get chilly on airplanes.

This is essential when dressing comfortably to travel. Lightweight and loose-fitting clothes let you look cute without sitting in a seat for hours on end with your clothes digging into you.

New Festival Style

Every year, the Coachella weekends see thousands of people in flower crowns, fringe, and general boho attire gather to see some of the world's most popular music. Personally, though, I'm kind of tired of seeing the same street style over and over every year. Luckily, this year saw a couple new trends that I'd buy tickets to Coachella to wear.

Everyone Deserves Their Perfect Prom

I was so lucky to have a perfect senior prom. I found my dress for $12 at a discount clothing store and I got to go with my best friends. Not to mention that's how my boyfriend and I started dating! However, I understand that not everyone isn't nearly as lucky as I was that year. While I can't make your crush ask you to prom, I can help by providing some prom style inspiration that often get overlooked in prom magazines or sites. After all: everyone deserves to have their perfect prom.

If you're uncomfortable in a dress (and not just because they often fit a bit tight), a jumpsuit is an awesome alternative. A formal jumpsuit is great because they can so easily be dressed up or down, so you can wear it long after prom is over!

I've never paid more than $20 for a school formal dress. It can be pretty tricky to find dresses at such a low price, but I promise, they're out there! Holiday Wear Inspiration

'Tis the season for holiday celebrations, and the monotonous Instagram and Facebook pictures that come along with any excuse to dress up. If you're looking to set yourself apart from the rest of the formal holiday crowd, check out these tips to rework your holiday attire.

Black is the perfect color for an evening dress. Take your look one step further by adding some serious texture with lace all-over or even some well-placed lace overlay.

Sparkles for the new year are, well, so last year. Dress in one of the sultriest colors and you'll stand out even more from the crowd!

There are so many nights of Hanukkah (happy 2nd night, by the way!) that it's hard to dress up for all 8. Go a little more casual with a full high-waisted navy skirt. Dress it up or down, depending on the formality of your family.

Green is a classic Christmas color, which is nifty as this emerald green is simply perfect for winter. Don't just go with a silky green dress: step out of your comfort zone and dress up silk trousers or a silk top.

Sure: as a Jew, I don't know a lot about Christmas. But from the minimal experience I have had with the holiday, I know that a lot of the day is just lounging around with family. Stay comfortable but ready for pictures in a magnificent oversized sweater dress.

What to Wear for Thanksgiving Dinner

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays of the year, but I have to admit, I love dressing for every holiday regardless of which one it is. Thanksgiving is especially fun to dress for because you're not trying to impress anyone but yourself, and maybe a couple relatives that don't exactly understand the direction you're life is going in. So, take this opportunity to dress up in your dream fall outfit and receive loving compliments from your parents (even if the outfit might not end up looking like a dream).
